First Day of Class

Written 1/19:

According to the schedule I was supposed to be in class from 9AM to 4PM today with an hour break for lunch. We got done with class at 11AM :) That's because my class is only 3 people, all American students: me, Kristy from ISU (whom I met on the tour), and Nathan from Colorado. All of us have taken basic physics and calculus already as well as had a good understanding of kinetics in a general sense so the big review/introduction session that the professor had planned didn't take much time at all. My professor is really cool too. His name is Hans and he did a post-doc for 3 years at Caltech so his English is really good. Plus he's pretty laid back and willing to rearrange the schedule a little since our class is so small. He just used the same schedule as last year because this is the last semester this class is being offered (The university reorganized their chemistry program). We had class in a conference room and Hans brought coffee/tea/pasteries. He also made these really nice binders for us with a lot of the course material. The building that we have class in is the Ångstrom Laboratories. It's the newest building on campus so it's really nice and you have to have a swipe card to get into the different sections of the building since there are also research labs in there. Hopefully the other 2 lecturers and 2 TAs are as cool as Hans and that we can not be in class so much because we can move through the material quickly with only 3 people in the class. I'm going to try to arrange study sessions or lunch breaks or something for the other two in my class since I live so close. But they both live in Flogsta so I might have to go over there for homework/studying.

Funny story:
I was going around town, doing errands in the snow when I passed a McDonalds. I was cold and a little hungry but I only had pocket change so I decided to just the dollar menu fries (5 SEK). I looked at the menu and found them: mellan pommes frites (yeah they stole the French word). I ordered in Swedish because I didn't think it would be too hard. I thought I had done it right because the cashier smiled and nodded like she had understood. I should have guessed that something was wrong when it rang up as 16 SEK (more than I had so I had to pay with my card) and she disappeared into the back. When she came back she had a chocolate muffin. The muffin was good, but not really what I had wanted. I went from there to go sign up for the Basic Swedish class, lol.

Oh and Happy Birthday to me (and Jenny apparently)! My landlord dropped by and gave me a heater while I was out :) Now my room can be extra toasty which will make getting out of bed easier in the mornings. Or getting back to my apartment late like I did from Karaoke Night at ÖG Nation. I went because I was bored and don't really have homework yet. Since I was by myself I guess it was obvious that I was new so this girl from Illinois who's been here a semester already kind of took me under her wing and introduced me to a lot of the "old" exchange students. She was also telling me about Kalmar Nation, which is belongs to, and I think that's on the top of my list to join now (we'll see after the open house tomorrow). I also texted Natalee/Jenny who happened to be down the street at Kalmar getting dinner, so eventually the whole crew arrived :). I was able to exchange numbers so I can actually call people now! I tried a pear based cider, yummy! And we all wanted to sing a song but we had  a hard time choosing since not everyone was familiar with a lot of songs and there were a lot of people so they were trying to not have repeats (unless it's "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic). Finally we signed up for "Wake Me Up Before You GoGo" by Wham but it was 11:30 and it was nowhere near our turn so we decided to go home without singing :(. I did get some pictures of people and will have steal some from Zaneta on Facebook. Also, check out this hilarious video of a drunk? Swedish guy trying to sing the YMCA. The picture is of the what he's supposed to be singing but listen to the audio, lol!!
